The Kendall Building is a place I walk by at least 10 times a week. It is large and hauntingly elegant. When I was 14, my parents would drop me off at Kendall College of Art and Design where I was enrolled in their weekend photography program. This is the building that caught my attention every time we passed it. Back at that time, downtown Grand Rapids was in bad shape. The majority of the buildings down here looked like this. I always thought about how cool it would be to live there, and how much history must be stored in there just waiting to be unearthed. It was announced a few weeks ago that this building is being renovated into lofts. This is one of the last buildings in this area to undergo this type of modernization. Because this place has had my attention for over 20 years, I thought it would be cool to document its transformation. Throughout the Spring and Summer, I’ll post an occasional photo to show the progress. Here is photo number 1, which was taken today.
Month: March 2013
coffee time
I was going through some more photos today when I came across my red cup of coffee photo. I remember doing this one afternoon at my old house. My main source of light was natural daylight with an off camera flash to fill in the shadows around the back. I love red as an accent color. The tabletop surface was a discarded table from a local brewery.
This Made My Day
I took a look on amazon today just to check in on my book listing. The cool part is that it has been picked up by 12 online stores for extended distribution. The funny part is this listing for a used copy of my book, They want $27 and claim that there have been “Millions Sold!” Too funny.
Downtown Chicago
I haven’t been out photographing much lately, so I thought I’d post a photo I took back in May while I was in downtown Chicago. I brought my daughter down to visit Columbia College where I studied photography in the late ’90s. While facing west we could see fog seeping into the city, which is what you see in this photograph.
At Mackinac Island
Most photographers never post pictures of themselves. I am one of those people… until today. My husband took this pic of me taking a photo of the Mackinac Bridge in Northern Michigan. This was back in September. We are standing on the front porch of the Grand Hotel, and I am using my most commonly used piece of photography equipment, my phone.
